NEW DELHI/GURGAON: On Sunday, he fired at Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartments house in Bandra. Earlier this year, in Feb, he similarly rode a bike to intercept a Gurgaon-based bookie and shot him dead.
Vishal Kalu (27), who his family describes as an “introvert”, was at the heart of a multi-agency, multi-state manhunt on Monday, emerging rather suddenly on the radar as a brazen hitman, quite the opposite of his persona at home.
A henchman of jailed don Lawrence Bishnoi and Portugal-based gangster Rohit Godara, 27-year-old Vishal (the one sporting a red T-shirt in CCTV visuals of the two shooters captured in Mumbai, which TOI published on its front page on Monday) was already being pursued by Haryana police’s special task force for the murder of Sachin Munjal on Feb 29.
Sachin and his family were on their way to a wedding when he was shot by three men at a dhaba in Rohtak. Vishal, police said, was one of three shooters hired by Godara. Sachin’s mother attempted to protect him but was also shot at by the assailants. The shooting was captured on a CCTV camera and the footage showed his wife managed to escape unharmed by running inside the dhaba with her children.
TOI had reported in its Monday edition that one of the shooters had been identified as Vishal from Gurgaon and that he had committed a businessman’s murder last month. Godara, meanwhile, made headlines after orchestrating the killing of Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Gogamedi last Dec.
While Mumbai’s crime branch is the main agency investigating the firing outside Salman’s house, the intelligence establishment, including Delhi Police’s special cell, are also involved in locating Vishal and his accomplice, who is also from Haryana.
Searches, a source said, are under way in Goa, Bihar and other places. Police had on Sunday conducted raids in Hisar to get some leads on Vishal’s aide, the source added.
Vishal’s criminal history began with minor offences such as bike theft and escalated to murder. The youngest of four siblings — three brothers and a sister — he left school in his Mahiburpura after Class 9 and started doing odd jobs to sustain his family. While his two brothers worked as painters, Vishal became involved with local gangs engaged in street crimes like snatchings and thefts.
He was arrested but got bail. Three cases of robbery, snatching and Arms Act violations were registered against him at Bawana police station of Delhi in 2023. Similar FIRs were registered against Vishal in Haryana.
At home, he was, apparently, a different man, so quiet that others could not tell if he was around. According to Vishal’s sister Barkha, he left home on Feb 27 — two days before Sachin’s murder — and hasn’t returned since. “At home, he mostly keeps to himself and talks very little, let alone taking part in family functions. He hasn’t reached out to his brothers. I am not aware of his whereabouts. Police teams from Delhi and other parts of Haryana came home seeking information on Vishal,” she told TOI, alleging there were threats of Vishal’s encounter.
Cops in Haryana said they planned to question Vishal in connection with Sachin’s murder and seek his remand once he is arrested. “Our team has been tracking Vishal for the past few months,” an STF officer said.
